What is Deepotsav?

Deepotsav is an annual celebration that marks the festival of Diwali in the town of Ayodhya in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Here are the details:

  1. Deepotsav, which translates to “Festival of Lamps”, is a grand event in Ayodhya where millions of earthen lamps are lit to recreate the historic return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after a 14-year exile. The entire town is illuminated with lamps, and the atmosphere is filled with festivity.

  2. Where does it happen? Deepotsav is celebrated in Ayodhya, a historic city located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Ayodhya is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Rama and holds significant importance in Hindu mythology.

  3. When does it happen? Deepotsav is celebrated during the festival of Diwali, which usually falls in October or November based on the Hindu lunar calendar. The specific date varies each year, depending on the moon’s cycle. This Year Deepotsav will be celebrated on Saturday 11th November’2023

  4. How to participate? Anyone can participate in Deepotsav by visiting Ayodhya during the time of Diwali. Here are some general guidelines:

    • Plan Ahead: Given the popularity of the event, it’s a good idea to plan your trip in advance. Make sure to book accommodations and transportation early.

    • Dress Appropriately: While there’s no strict dress code, it’s recommended to wear traditional Indian attire to immerse yourself in the festivities fully.

    • Join the Celebrations: Deepotsav involves various events, including cultural programs, processions, and the main event of lighting the lamps. You can participate by lighting lamps or simply enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.

    • Respect Local Customs and Traditions: As with any religious or cultural event, it’s crucial to be respectful and aware of local customs and practices. For instance, many people fast during Diwali or abstain from certain foods.

    • Stay Safe: Considering the massive crowds that Deepotsav attracts, it’s essential to be cautious. Keep your belongings safe, be aware of your surroundings, and follow any guidelines or instructions provided by local authorities.

If you’re interested in a more hands-on or organized participation, you can also contact local tour operators or the tourism department of Uttar Pradesh. They might have specific programs or events designed for tourists to engage in the festivities.
